Donut Cake

So I did this thing. This amazing, epic thing. I made a cake out of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. YES, PEOPLE. A KRISPY KREME-INSPIRED DOUGHNUT CAKE.

So I actually scoured the internet, and doughnut cakes aren’t really a thing… yet. There are doughnut walls, but not doughnut cakes. But let’s focus on the positive. This means that we can be the first and best Doughnut Cake makers out there. So let’s make Doughnut Cakes a thing in 2018.

What is in a doughnut cake, you ask? How do you make one? Well, you need three dozen Krispy Kreme Original Glazed® Doughnuts, a whole lotta whipped cream, and homemade chocolate fudge sauce. Easy enough right?

How to customize your donut cake

Of course, the coolest thing about this cake is that you can create really awesome variations. Some I thought of:

  • Substitute the traditional whipped cream for an eggnog whipped cream for a holiday-inspired cake.
  • Instead of fudge sauce, use salted caramel for that salty/sweet combo everyone loves.
  • Sub traditional Krispy Kreme yeasted doughnuts for Krispy Kreme Glazed Chocolate Cake Doughnuts for a chocolate explosion!

How to make a doughnut cake

This cake is incredibly easy to put together. No need to make your own doughnuts, Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Doughnuts are absolutely perfect for the job. They’re light, fluffy, and the perfect size to make into a six-layer doughnut cake.

To ensure your cake stands nice and tall, you need to lay out the cake layers in a specific pattern. The bottom two layers use six doughnuts (one in the center and five circled around it). The next two layers up use just four doughnuts, and so on. Homemade whipped cream holds all the layers together, and the rich chocolate fudge sauce is poured on top to take this cake to the next level.

To keep the cake looking especially gorgeous, I cut some of my doughnuts into quarters, then used them to fill in any gaps between the whole doughnuts. It made it so my cake didn’t have these deep caverns around the outside 🙂

And of course, in true Broma Bakery fashion, a sparkler on top is a perfect way to present a cake. I mean, just look at that glow.

Units:

Ingredients

for the cake:

  • 3 dozen Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

for the chocolate fudge sauce:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

    1. In a standing mixer with a whisk attachment, whip the cream and sugar until medium to stiff peaks form.
    2. For layer one, spread a small dollop onto a large cake stand, then place one donut in the center. Place five doughnuts around it, creating your first layer. Spoon about 3/4 cup whipped cream over the doughnuts, then repeat the process for your second layer- one doughnut in the center, five doughnuts around it, and 3/4 cup whipped cream on top.
    3. For layers three and four, place four doughnuts onto the cake, creating a pyramid of sorts. Again, add 3/4 cup whipped cream in between the layers.
    4. For layer 5, place 3 doughnuts in a triangle, then add 1/4 cup whipped cream, just in the center.
    5. For layer 6, place a single doughnut on top!
    6. To make the fudge sauce, heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan until scalding. Remove from heat and add in chocolate chips. Stir until combined. Allow sauce to cool slightly before drizzling over the cake!

  1. Okay, full disclosure: I did not make the donuts for my donut cake from scratch (I was tight for time) but I did take inspiration for the cake’s presentation from your recipe and photos. The donut cake was a TOTAL hit with a bunch of 10 year old boys for a birthday party. Thanks for the inspo!

    • I am not sure the exact height! It’s probably about 9 or 10 inches if I had to guess!

    • Hi Lauren! I would recommend making this the day of for best results! Homemade whipped cream doesn’t hold up very well and the donuts will dry out a bit if left out for too long before serving!

  2. Hello Idk if u will answer but can i do the doughnut cake without the heavy cream and sugar mixture and without the chocolate? Like I need it plain for my sister’s birthday she loves original glazed and would like them without the heavy cream .

    • Hi Uthi. Happy birthday to your sister! You can definitely do the cake plain, but keep in mind that it will not really stick together like a cake at all. It will be more a tower of donuts but still delicious!
