I am currently sitting on a beach in Mexico, sipping on a spicy passionfruit margarita. Which is pretty darn fitting considering this post coming to you is about margaritas, Mexico, and Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo is a well-known holiday in the USA, but not everyone knows what it signifies. Without boring you too much, basically on May 5th of 1862, 4,000 Mexican troops defeated twice as many Fresh colonial occupiers near the city of Puebla, Mexico. Today, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated because of this battle’s significance in defeating the French occupiers, as it boosted Mexican morale and slowed the French’s march towards Mexico City.

Woohoo! History!

Also Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the USA because it means margaritas. Which, let’s be honest, almost everyone loves a margarita.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo coming up, I’m partnering with Patrón Tequila on this post to celebrate some of those margaritas. You see, every year around this time, Patrón embarks on a search for the Margarita of the Year.

This year, Patrón selected seven bartenders from around the world to design their own interpretations of the Perfect Margarita using a variety of combinations inspired by their local region.

Each cocktail gives a nod to the classic recipe, while also shaking things up with a combination of ingredients like cayenne-chile, blackberry shrub, or spicy passionfruit, to highlight the versatility of one of the world’s most popular and enduring cocktails.

Patrón asked me to highlight my choice from their list of 7 contenders, and I just had to go with the Spicy Passionfruit Margarita, made with a homemade spicy passionfruit syrup, orange liqueur, and Patrón Tequila. It was every bit as delicious as I imagined, and it got my super stoked about my current trip in Mexico! 🙂

Of course, even if you aren’t in Mexico, this margarita makes you feel like you are. It’s spicy, sweet, tropical, and totally refreshing. Aka it’s the perfect way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year 🙂

  1. Have you used turbinado sugar in your drink? It makes passion fruit strip very brown and your drink is not that. Also 1kilo of sugar seems to be way too much. And one drink proportions are questionable too. Using what you mentioned makes less than a glass..
