No-Bake Tahini Chocolate Date Balls

I’m a huge fan of healthy snacks. Because I’m one of those people who eats every 3 hours and, like, loves snacks. But so often, snacks from the store are loaded with sugar, fat, salt, or some combination of the three. So I prefer to make my own snacks at home.

Enter: these date energy balls (also called energy bites (also called YUM IN MY TUM)). Aka the raw, healthy snack typically filled with medjool dates and nut butter. I’m such a huge fan of energy balls, because I can take them anywhere, and they keep me satiated until dinnertime.

In fact, when Alex was on his night rotation this summer, I would make an entire batch of these chocolate date balls every other day because he rarely had time to eat. It was a great way for him to get in protein and healthy fats, and keep him from crashing.

Energy balls, saving the doctors who save you since Summer ’18.

Anywho. These Chocolate Tahini Date Energy Balls are the latest in my energy ball repertoire. They’re made with only 4 ingredients, and are raw and refined sugar-free. They basically taste like a super fudgy truffle. With tahini. Because it’s Middle Eastern Month!!

How to make tahini chocolate date balls

When making my own snacks, I like to keep things as simple as possible. Because if a healthy snack recipe has a million steps and lots of prep work, chances are good that I’ll never make it. To make these tahini chocolate date balls, you have to:

Puree all the ingredients — Throw the pitted dates, tahini, cocoa powder, and vanilla into a food processor and puree until combined (you don’t want any chunks of date to be left). You’ll need to scrape down the sides of the food processor every few seconds to make sure everything is incorporated.

Roll into balls — Once the ingredients have been pureed, form the date energy balls. The mixture might be a bit crumbly and tough to roll at first. If that’s the case, squish the date mixture between your palms to condense it as much as possible. Once you do that, you should be able to form 1-inch balls.

Roll in shredded coconut — After you’ve formed the date balls, roll them immediately in shredded coconut. You can eat them right away if you’re hungry!

Tips for making these date balls

Roughly chop the dates, if needed — If your food processor is older or the blade is slightly dull, you might have to roughly chop the dates before pureeing them. This will make blending all the ingredients together much easier and faster!

Use high-quality ingredients — Because these tahini chocolate date balls are so easy to make and use so few ingredients, it’s really important that you use the best ingredients you can get your hands on. If you buy the cheapest tahini your grocery store sells, these date balls will likely taste a little bitter because of it. You also want to use pure vanilla extract, if possible.

Use unsweetened coconut — If you’re new to the world of energy balls, you might be doubting the sweetening power of dates. But trust me, these date energy balls are plenty sweet enough thanks to the dates. If you roll them in sweetened coconut, these will be too sweet!

Add protein powder, if desired — This recipe doesn’t have protein powder in it, but if you’re looking to get in a little more protein, I’d suggest adding 1/3 cup to the recipe.

How to store date balls

You’ll need to store these tahini chocolate date balls in an airtight container in the fridge. These energy balls will keep for up to 2 weeks and stay nice and firm in the fridge. I don’t recommend keeping these on your countertop, as the balls won’t hold their shape well. I’ve never tried keeping these in the freezer, so I’m not sure how that would work out!

These 4-ingredient Tahini Chocolate Date Balls are one of my go-to healthy snacks. And bonus: they’re raw, refined sugar-free, and vegan!

Units:

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups pitted medjool dates
  • 1/3 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup high quality cocoa powder (I recommend Rodelle)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut, for rolling

Instructions

    1. In a food processor or high powered blender, puree the dates, tahini, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Scrape down the sides of the processor a few times to make sure everything gets combined!
    2. Remove from food processor and roll into 1-inch balls. You might have to squeeze them in your hands a few times to get them as condensed as possible, then roll them between your palms.
    3. Roll the balls in about 1 cup of unsweetened shredded coconut. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks!

Notes

If you’re looking to get in a little more protein, I’d suggest adding 1/3 cup of protein powder to this recipe.

  1. Absolutely delicious! My husband also loved them and thought they were a real treat. I might try adding raisins and perhaps cinnamon next time.

  2. Super yummy. I added about a tbsp of peanut butter and added half a cup of coconut to the mixture as well.

  3. These energy balls look delicious and your pictures are gorgeous! I love how simple the ingredient list is.
Thanks so much for sharing. I love your site!

  4. Hi, I was wondering how it would taste if you used cacao nibs ground up instead of cocoa powder….I’ve been making your recipe for a few months. They are awesome! I got my sister making them also. Thank you for the recipe.

    • I’ve never heard of anyone doing that in place of cocoa powder but it sounds like a good idea haha. I would imagine the texture would be slightly different, but this recipe is pretty forgiving. Let us know how it goes 🙂

  5. These are absolutely delicious! I used just a smiggen of pure stevia. And 1/2 teaspoon Coconut oil. The texture is perfect and the tahini is the secret! This is a keeper. Thanks for this recipe.
