The Ultimate Smashed Potatoes

If you’ve never had smashed potatoes before…my most sincere condolences. These salty, crunchy, carby little guys have quickly become one of our favorite side dishes for pretty much any meal! I’m so excited to share the recipe for these potatoes and also a look at our gorgeous new kitchen featuring the Café Double Oven Electric Range!

What are smashed potatoes?

Smashed potatoes are the perfect side for dinner, brunch or even as a snack–I’ll pretty much eat them anytime of day. They feel a little fancier than french fries, but are so much more flavorful than mashed potatoes. Plus, when you air fry them you won’t need much oil to get them nice and crunchy, which means they’re pretty healthy too!

Ingredients for smashed potatoes

These smashed potatoes are not only delicious, but also super easy to make–I’m talking 4 simple ingredients and minimal prep time. In fact, you probably already have most of the ingredients in your pantry. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Potatoes: We recommend using small gold or red potatoes!
  • Olive Oil: You can also use butter or whatever oil is your favorite! Thanks to the Café Air Fry mode you won’t need too much of it to get your smashed potatoes nice and crunchy.
  • Garlic: We like to use freshly minced garlic, but you can also sub it out for a teaspoon of garlic powder. That’s the beauty of this smashed potato recipe–it’s super customizable!
  • Salt: Obviously! You’ll need some salt to take these potatoes to the next level.

How to make your smashed potatoes extra crispy

When we signed the lease on our gorgeous new studio space, I knew we had to put in the most gorgeous and functional kitchen. I mean…DUH. So, it was a no-brainer that we needed a Café range. Our Café electric range is gorgeous AND functional. I was already obsessed with the smart control features that allow you to preheat, set timers, and control your oven from your phone, but there’s more. My new favorite feature is hands down the No Preheat Air Fry Mode. Café rolled this “Over-the-Air” software upgrade out in April and I literally can’t stop air-frying everything in sight. A software upgrade for your oven? Say what? I know SO COOL. Just like you’d update your smart phone or computer, you can update the software on your Cafè oven to download new features and modes in our oven!

I’ve always wanted an air fryer and love that I have one built right into my oven now. SCORE. These downloadable software upgrades are always helping me to level up my cooking and I can’t wait to see what Café has up their sleeves next! The Air Fry mode on the Café range gets your oven super hot and circulates the air to give you super crispy smashed potatoes. You basically get all the crunch you’d get with deep-frying but without all that oil and clean up.

I listed out some of our other tips for guaranteed crunchy potatoes below:

  1. Use small potatoes: You can make smashed potatoes from any kind of potato, but I find small potatoes produce the crunchiest ones!
  2. Leave the skins on: Not only do potato skins provide flavor and nutrition they’ll also crisp up nice and crunchy.
  3. Don’t overcrowd them: The more space the air has to circulate around your potatoes, the crispier the edges will get. I like to place them about 2 inches apart on my cookie sheet.

Units:

Ingredients

  • 1 pound gold baby potatoes
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves of garlic, finely minced
  • 2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
  • Freshly cracked pepper, to taste
  • Chives, optional

    4. Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them and toss with olive oil, garlic, and the remaining salt.
    5. Place the potatoes a few inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets and use a fork or the bottom of a glass to smash the potatoes down to about ¼ inch thickness.
    6. Bake in the air fryer for 20 minutes. Use a spatula to flip the potatoes over and bake for another 20 minutes or until the potatoes are golden brown.
    7. Serve hot!

  1. Absolutely delicious and so easy too‼️In fact I put them into my convection oven while I was using my air fryer for chicken skewers and the treats most especially the potatoes were an amazing side dish that I’ll make from here on! Thank you‼️💕

  2. I love making little schmashed potatoes. Sometimes the best part of one’s day is squashing the food before eating it! If you don’t have an air fryer, just use your regular oven . 400°F for 20 minutes, flip, bake for another 20 minutes as same as the directions above. And use coarse sea salt! So nice!
