The best chocolate mug cake

Sometimes I just need dessert in my belly immediately. You know the mood I’m talking about? When you have intense hankering for cake and you can’t be bothered to go out for it, break out a bowl or even light the oven? Because, let’s be real, often I want cake. But not often do I want to make a WHOLE cake. That’s where a mug cake comes in. Specifically a decadent chocolate mug cake that tastes every bit as delicious as a piece of chocolate birthday cake. You’ll only need 10 ingredients, 3 minutes, and a microwave.

Let’s do this.

So…what is a chocolate mug cake?

There’s nothing better than an easy chocolate dessert in my opinion and this chocolate mug cake is as easy as it gets. A mug cake is a single serving cake made in your microwave with minimal ingredients. And boy, oh boy it is TASTY. It’s uber chocolatey, super moist, and tastes just like a chocolate cake you would make in your oven. Except it’s done in a fraction of the time in your microwave!

What do you need to make this chocolate mug cake:

This chocolate mug cake requires the same ingredients you’d need to make a full size chocolate cake meaning it will be every bit as scrumptious and delicious as the real deal. That being said, you will not need eggs to make this chocolate mug cake meaning it’s vegan friendly and requires mostly dry pantry ingredients!

  • Cocoa Powder
  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Oil
  • Milk
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Espresso Powder
  • Salt

How to make a mug cake?

Mug cakes are perfect for all occasions and all ages. When I was little I used to make them after school with my sister and I still make them now when I have a hankering for a cake but don’t feel like making a whole cake. And lucky for you, it’s incredibly easy to make!

Step One: Place all the dry ingredients in a mug.

Step Two: Add the wet ingredients.

Ways to level up your chocolate mug cake?

This chocolate mug cake is absolutely scrumptious as is, but if you want to take it to the next level, we highly encourage adding in a few (or all!) of these optional ingredients!

  • Add a spoonful of peanut butter: So this isn’t optional in my book. I HIGHLY recommend dropping a big dollop of PB in your batter before popping your mug cake in the microwave.
  • Stir in some chocolate chips: We like to stir in a tablespoon of chocolate chips to make this mug cake super super chocolatey.
  • Drizzle with caramel: Chocolate + caramel is one of the best flavor combos and it’s no exception here. You can make your own or use store bought!
  • Top with whipped cream: We always keep a can of whipped cream in our fridge. You know…for emergencies. Finishing off your mug cake with a healthy dose of whipped cream for a light, creamy finish to your decadent chocolate cake.
  • Finish off with a scoop of ice cream: The only thing better than chocolate cake is a chocolate cake a la mode. Top your chocolate mug cake off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of hot fudge sauce for the ultimate sundae.

  1. super airy and light , perfectly sweet, great chocolate flavour overall a great mug cake. my first recipe from bromabakery and i’m impressed already

  2. This is delicious. My eleven year old makes it on the regular for us. We use decaf instant coffee in lieu of espresso powder and it’s so good.

  3. Literal perfection. I don’t ever leave reviews about recipes, but this one was too good not to review (and give it the 5 stars it deserves). Hands down best chocolate mug cake (and trust me, I’ve tried at least a dozen). So moist. So delicious. I also added crushed Oreos for even more chocolate flavor.
