Homemade Twix Bars

I grew up on Twix. That crinkly gold wrapper, the creamy chocolate exterior, the chewy caramel, and the crunchy cookie…I mean, you’re salivating too right? And if there’s anything better than a fresh Twix, it’s a homemade one. These homemade Twix bars are every bit as delicious as the packaged candy bar. Dare I say…they’re better?! I DO.

What are homemade Twix?

I hope that you’ve had a Twix before. If you haven’t, I don’t know what else to say other than I’m sorry. If you have tasted the glorious confection of a chewy, crunchy, chocolatey Twix, then you know it is one of the *elite* candy bars. It consists of three scrumptious layers:

  1. Biscuit: The biscuit cookie provides a satisfying crunch to offset all that chewy caramel and creamy chocolate.
  2. Homemade Caramel: This is the true star of these Twix bars. You’ll make a salty-sweet homemade caramel that will knock your socks off.
  3. Chocolate: Any good candy bar is smothered in chocolate and these homemade Twix bars are no exception!

Ingredients for homemade Twix

You’ll need a fair amount of ingredients to make Twix bars at home. And sure, you could just grab a Twix in the checkout line (and we wouldn’t judge you for it), but homemade candy bars are fun to make, delicious, and aren’t loaded up with any weird ingredients or fillers. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Butter
  • Sugar
  • Egg yolk
  • Salt
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Heavy Cream
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Chocolate
  • Coconut oil

Tips for the best Twix bars

Homemade candy bars are definitely a bit more work than chocolate chip cookies or blueberry muffins, but they are so worth the extra effort. I actually find the process of making a more involved recipe very therapeutic. But baking is only therapeutic if you have all the information you need at your disposal. Follow these tips and you’re guaranteed perfect homemade Twix bars.

  1. Use high quality chocolate: Like most candy bars, these Twix bars are coated in a thick layer of creamy chocolate. It will be the first flavor note you’ll taste when you bite into your scrumptious candy bar so it’s important to use a good one! We recommend Ghiradelli, Lindt, or any other high quality chocolate brand.
  2. Chill the caramel and cookie layer: Make sure you give the cookie/caramel bars time to chill and really set up. This will make dunking each candy bar in chocolate so much easier and cleaner. Trust me. I learned the hard way.
  3. Don’t forget the salt: I cannot stress enough how important salt is in sweet treats. If you don’t use enough salt your homemade Twix will taste overpoweringly sweet.

So go ahead, my friends. Chew it over with a homemade Twix.

Units:

Ingredients

for the cookie layer

  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

for the chocolate coating

  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon coconut oil

for the caramel layer

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6 Tablespoons butter
  • 6 Tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a 8 x 8 inch pan with parchment on all sides. This is very important in assembling your bars, so make sure to line all sides with parchment with a two inch overhang! Set aside.
    2. In a food processor combine all of the cookie ingredients Pulse until just combined and the mixture forms a dough ball. Press the dough into the prepared pan, using your hands to spread the dough into an even layer.
    3. Bake at 350°F for 20 minutes or until just light golden brown. Take out of the oven and allow the bars to cool completely.
    4. While the bars cool, make the homemade caramel. In a heavy bottomed sauce pan, heat the sugar on medium low heat until its completely melted, swirling the pan gently every 20 seconds or so. The sugar will start to form clumps before melting slowly. Be patient and keep an eye on it to make sure it does not burn.
    5. Once melted, remove from heat immediately and stir in the butter. The mixture will violently bubble. You’re doing it right.
    6. Next, pour in the heavy cream and 1/2 teaspoon of the sea salt. Stir until everything is combined. Taste a spoonful of cooled caramel. If desired add the remaining sea salt to taste! Take off the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
    7. Once the caramel has cooled slightly pour over the cookie bars, spreading into an even layer. Cover the pan with tinfoil or plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least two hours or overnight to set.
    8. Once the bars are set, pull the parchment paper up to pull the bars out of the pan and place on a cutting board. Use a sharp knife to cut into 16 bars approximately 3 inches by 3/4 inch wide. You’ll want to cut the square in half on one side and then into 1/8ths.
    9. Place the bars in the freezer to keep them set while you melt the chocolate.
    10. Finely chop the chocolate into small pieces and place in a microwave safe bowl with the coconut oil. Microwave in 20 second increments, stirring between each. Repeat until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. You can also do this in a double boiler if you would rather.
    11. Gently drop each Twix into the chocolate, using a fork to flip the cookie bar over to evenly coat all sides of the cookie. Place on wax paper. Repeat with the rest of the the Twix.
    12. Place in the fridge to set until the chocolate has hardened, about 15 minutes. Enjoy!

  1. Delicious!

But the recipe is a little confusing in the caramel step, as it instructs to take the caramel off the heat and add the butter, then the other ingredients. But then it says to take off the heat later once everything is combined. And doesn’t mention when to add the vanilla. I noticed after I added the butter the caramel started to harden and wouldn’t mix with the cream so I put it back on low heat to combine everything and that seemed to do the trick.

  2. I love being able to make these from scratch! how much fun, good tip too about chilling before dipping into chocolate, thank you!
