Walnut Maple Apple Crisp

There are very few food couplings that complement each other better than apples and maple in my opinion. The rich, bold sweetness of maple syrup pairs beautifully with juicy, tart apples to make a truly delicious symphony of flavors. I just LOVE it. And maple & apple are on full display in this scrumptious walnut maple apple crisp AKA the fall dessert of your dreams.

Ingredients for maple apple crisp

The beautiful thing about crisp is that it is super easy to make. Like, WAY easier than pie and every bit as delicious. You’ll need a handful of ingredients and spices that you probably already have on hand for all your fall baking needs. Here’s your shopping list:

  • Apples
  • Maple Syrup
  • Flour
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Ground Ginger
  • Ground Nutmeg
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Brown Sugar
  • Oats

Because these ingredients are so simple, make sure you’re using high quality butter, maple syrup and apples for the best results! Good ingredients will really take your maple apple crisp to the next level!

What kind of apples should you use to make homemade apple crisp?

We recommend using a mix of different apples for the most varied deep apple flavor. Use half tarter, cooking apples like granny smith and half sweeter flavors! This will ensure that some of the apples remain tart and crisp while others will break down into a jammy, cinnamon-sugar dream. For the sweeter apples you can use whatever you have on hand: gala, honey crisp, pink lady, envy…any kind will do.

How to make maple apple crisp ahead of time

Crisp is a great dessert to make for a crowd because it’s super easy to put together and pretty much everyone loves it. But often with party desserts you’ll want to make them ahead so you can spend your time enjoying the party and not tied to the kitchen cooking. We like to prep this apple crisp two different ways if you’d like to make it ahead of time!

  1. Make the maple apple crisp and freeze before baking. You can assemble your filling and crisp topping as directed, cover with plastic wrap and pop in the freezer for up to 2 months! When you’re ready to bake it off, bring the crisp to room temperature and then bake as directed!
  2. Reheat it. You can also bake off your apple crisp according to directions and then reheat it when ready to serve! Your crisp won’t be as crunchy, but it will still be delicious! We recommend reheating at 375°F for 15 too 20 minutes or until the crisp starts bubbling again!

Units:

Ingredients

For The Apple Part

  • 5 large apples (3 granny smith, 2 sweeter variety)
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 2 Tablespoons flour or cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For The Crisp Topping

  • 1/2 cup butter, cut into cubes
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

    1. Butter a 9 inch round pan and preheat the oven to 375°F. Set the pan aside.
    2. Peel and core the apples before slicing into thin 1/8 – 1/4″ slices. Place in a large mixing bowl and add the rest of the ingredients for the apple layer. Use your hands or a wooden spoon to mix together until the apples are evenly coated.
    3. Add the apples to the buttered dish and arrange in an even layer. Set aside.
    4. In a medium bowl, stir together the oats, nuts, flour, sugar, maples syrup, spices and salt. Use pastry cutter, a fork or your hands to cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles wet sand and clumps together. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the apples.
    5. Bake at 375°F for 10 minutes before reducing the temperature to 350°F and baking for 35 more minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apple layer is bubbling. Allow to cool before eating. We recommend serving with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream 🙂

Notes

  1. We recommend using a mixture of different apples to vary and deepen the apple flavor. We like to use 3 granny smith apples to make sure you have some hearty, tarter cooking apples to complement 3 fun, sweeter apples. Feel free to use whatever you hand (McIntosh, Pink Lady, Envy, Gala, Braeburn, Honey Crisp etc.)
