Ingredients for Peanut Butter Oreo Rice Krispie Treats

You’ll only need a few ingredients to pull together this fun Rice Krispie treats recipe! For these PB Oreo Rice Krispie treats you’ll need just a few more extra add-ins to take your Rice Krispies to the next level!

  • Marshmallows: You’ll need a standard size 16 ounce bag of marshmallows for this fun rice krispie treats recipe! You can use mini marshmallows or standard size, just make sure not to skimp and use a full bag!
  • Rice Krispies: Obviously an essential ingredient in Rice Krispie Treats!
  • Butter: Unsalted or salted butter will be fine! This will help keep your treats soft and chewy and prevent them from drying out.
  • Salt: Salt is the most underrated ingredient in baked goods.  A pinch of salt goes a LONG way in deepening the flavor of any sweet treat, so don’t leave it out!
  • Peanut Butter: We recommend using a traditional creamy peanut butter like Jiff or Skippy. A natural brand won’t set up or hold it’s shape like the good cheap stuff will, but if it’s all you have on hand it will absolutely work! Just don’t melt it!
  • Oreos: You’ll need about a half a package of standard Oreo cookies to achieve all that pb Oreo nostalgia. Simply crumble the Oreos up or place in a heavy duty plastic bag and use a rolling pin to crumble the Oreos. Personally, I feel that big chunks of Oreos are the way to go, but finer crumbs will work too!

How to make Rice Krispie treats?

Homemade Rice Krispie treats are a breeze to make, and with these quick tips you’ll have perfect homemade Rice Krispie treats in no time.

  • Don’t Forget the Salt: The salt is a major player in deepening the flavor profile of these otherwise super sweet treats.
  • Remove the marshmallows from the heat before stirring in anything else: If you stir in the cereal and the Oreos while the marshmallows are still cooking you’ll end up cooking your cereal a little bit too. This can lead to a chewier and stale tasting Rice Krispie treat, so make sure you take the butter/marshmallow mixture off the heat before stirring in any of the add-ins.
  • Don’t Over Mix the Peanut Butter: Peanut butter Rice Krispie treats are delicious in their own right, but for these bad boys you’ll want thick ribbons of peanut butter swirled throughout instead of a peanut butter, marshmallow mix holding the Rice Krispie Treat together. Drop the peanut butter in and fold once or twice to prevent the peanut butter from melting into the marshmallows.
  • Let the Treats Set: I understand the urge to inhale these the moment they’re in the pan, but it will just be a mess if you try to eat these before they set up. Let them set for at least an hour or pop in the freezer to set up even quicker!

Units:

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces marshmallows (1 standard size bag or about 8 cups of mini marshmallows)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • pinch of salt
  • 5 cups Rice Krispies Cereal
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter*
  • 16 Oreo Cookies (about 2 rows in a standard package of Oreos), roughly chopped

Instructions

    1. Line a 9 x 9 pan with parchment paper or grease with cooking spray and set aside.
    2. Place butter in a large pot over medium heat. Melt the butter, stirring constantly. Once the butter is melted add the marshmallows and salt. Use a rubber spatula to stir the marshmallows until fully melted, making sure that none of the marshmallows burn. Remove from the heat immediately
    3. Add the Rice Krispies and chopped Oreos, folding to fully coat the cereal and the Oreos evenly.
    4. Put the peanut butter in the microwave for 15 seconds or until melted slightly.
    5. Drop the melted peanut butter into the batter and fold a few times to distribute the peanut butter without fully mixing in the peanut butter. You want there to be thick swirls of peanut butter.
    6. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan, using a rubber spatula coated in cooking spray to press the mixture down into an even layer. If desired, top with more Oreo crumbles and drizzle with melted peanut butter. Allow to cool for at least an hour before slicing into twelve Rice Krispie treats. Enjoy!

Notes

  1. We recommend using a stiffer peanut butter like Jiff or Skippy rather than a natural peanut butter!

  1. I have one better that my mom has been making for decades! And, no marshmallows! 1 cup peanut butter, 1 bag of Butterscotch chips amd what ever the original recipe says for the amount of rice crispy. Melt in a pot and add the cereal. This stuff is like CRACK!

  2. I’ve always felt that Rice-Krispies are an underwhelming dessert. These peanut butter Oreo, Rice-Krispies have changed my mind! They are delicious and everything you want in a dessert!

  3. Brilliant! These are deceptively simple and weirdly sophisticated for such old-school ingredients (like, when I was a child in elementary school I sneaked bites of these ingredients). Satisfies all the cravings. Checks all the boxes – sweet, salt, chocolate, peanut butter, creamy, crunchy, familiar but new – it’s like magic. The only place I take issue is the hilarious instruction to wait an hour after pressing into the pan. HA HA HA! Surely you jest. #spoonlicker Nobody is going 60-mins with paws off the pan. Nobody. That’s how I know I did it right. Poof! Gone. Thank you for the new nostalgia. I love you. (Now do pop rocks?)

  4. Just came across this recipe, cannot wait to make it!! Can you please tell me what the * is for next to the peanut butter in the Ingredient list?

    • It’s in the notes below the ingredients 🙂 We just recommend using a thicker, creamy peanut butter like Jiff or Skippy rather than a natural peanut butter!
