Peach Crisp

Nothing says summer more than fresh, juicy peaches. And the best treat to whip up with fresh peaches is this no-fuss peach crisp! Like, is there anything better than a simple dish of roasted peaches and a buttery crisp topping?! NOPE. It is perfection in every bite. Serve it up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate peachy summer treat!

What is a peach crisp?

For me, crisp is the pinnacle of fruit desserts. Pies, galettes, cobblers…I mean, don’t get me wrong I like those too, but there’s something about the simplicity of fruit and a buttery, indulgent crisp topping that just feels right in the summer. The warm, tender peaches, combined with the buttery, oat-y crisp, create what can only be described (at least by me) as a beautiful symphony for your taste buds. I know that was really dramatic, but like…I mean it. Music to your taste buds.

Ingredients for peach crisp

Crisps are so great because the fruit really gets to be the star. But it also means you have to make sure you’re using fresh, ripe, juicy peaches because the flavor won’t be masked by anything else. Luckily you can grab all the in-season peaches at your local ALDI in their top notch produce section. You’ll need just a few baking staples and fresh peaches to whip this up, but ALDI has everything you need for all your summer occasions at fabulous prices!

How to tell if your peaches are ripe

If you’re not a regular peach eater, you might wander over to the produce section of your grocery store and wonder how to tell which peaches are ripe for the eating. Luckily, there are a few different tricks you can use to make sure you’re getting your hands on the freshest, juiciest, most flavorful peaches to bake up into this peach crisp:

  • Smell: This is my favorite way to tell if peaches are ripe. Give your peach a good sniff and see if it smells sweet and…well, peachy! If it has that fragrant, peachy aroma it’s probably ripe!
  • Softness: A ripe peach has a little give when you gently prod it. An underripe peach will be pretty firm, and an overripe peach will feel mushy.
  • Color: Ripe peaches are usually an orange-y red color all over. If you see a lot of green or yellow coloring the outside of your peaches they might not be ripe!

Like most fruits, peaches will continue to ripen on your counter, so if you get some under ripe ones at the store give them a few days on the counter and do your tests again to see if they’re ripe enough to bake with!

Our tips for making the perfect peach crisp

Peach crisp is one of the easiest, no fuss treats you can whip up this summer. But even simple desserts have secrets to make them delicious every time. Here are all the peach crisp tricks we have up our sleeves:

  • Use ripe, high quality peaches: The quality of your peaches will really shine through in the final product, so make sure you’re getting your hands on fresh, ripe peaches.
  • Go heavy on the crisp topping: I know we’ve spent a lot of time talking about the peaches, but the buttery, oaty, sweet crisp topping is really the cherry on top. I like to go pretty heavy on the crisp topping so every bite has a delicious crunch to it!
  • Serve it warm and a la mode (obviously): Did you even have peach crisp if you didn’t eat it hot out of the oven with a fat scoop of vanilla ice cream? I think not. Make sure to grab a pint of ice cream to serve alongside your peach crisp for the ultimate treat. You could even make a boozy peach float with the The Pacific Fruit Vineyard Bubbly Sweet Peach for the ultimate indulgence.

Units:

Ingredients

for the peaches:

  • 8 to 9 ripe peaches, pitted
  • 1/4 cup Simply Nature Organic Brown Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Bakers’ Corner All Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

for the crisp topping:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup Simply Nature Organic Brown Sugar, packed
  • 2/3 cup Bakers’ Corner All Purpose Flour
  • 2/3 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and generously butter a medium sized baking dish (we used an 11 x 7 oval, but a 9 x 9 or a 10 inch skillet would also be great!).
    2. Pit and thinly slice the peaches into half-moon shapes about ¼ inch thick. Place the peaches in your prepared dish and top with brown sugar, flour and vanilla extract. Use your hands or a wooden spoon to toss to combine. Once the peaches are evenly coated, gently spread them back into an even layer. Set aside.
    3. Next, make the crisp topping. Combine the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, and butter in a medium bowl and use your fingers or a fork to stir everything together.
    4. Crumble the crisp topping over the peaches to evenly coat the top.
    5. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until the peaches are bubbling and the crisp is golden brown.
    6. Allow to cool slightly before serving warm! Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the ultimate treat!
